With 2017 behind us, it’s time to make a game plan for the new year. You might make a resolution to eat healthier or practice a new hobby, but have you considered taking a look at your career? Setting professional goals for 2018 could get you out of your daily rut, increase productivity, and get you excited about work again! Here is the SMART way to get started:
- S – Specific.
The first step is to be specific about what changes you want to see, what results you want to get, and when you want to see those results. Knowing the details of your goal will help you picture it in your future and encourage progress. The more tangible you make your goal, the more attainable it will be.
- M – Meaningful.
What does this goal mean to you? If it has no personal significance, you won’t feel motivated to achieve it. Make sure you tie each goal to an internal drive that will propel you to the finish line.
- A – Action-Oriented and Attainable.
What exactly are you going to do differently in order to achieve your goal? You can have a grand plan all written out, but until you actually DO something about it, your goal won’t become reality. Also, make sure it’s something that you can actually reach. Setting unrealistic goals will only discourage you.
- R – Rewarding.
What do you want out of this? Picture the ending result, and treat yourself once you get there. Positive reinforcement is a great motivator to continue good habits and further your improvement. Try rewarding yourself with a piece of chocolate, night at the movies, or even a vacation day!
- T – Trackable.
Have a deadline. Get out your calendar and set times you want to have each task finished. Milestones will keep you on track and working towards the ultimate goal. It’s easy to procrastinate and give up, but if you hold yourself accountable, improvements will be made.
