Top Tips for a Successful Career Fair or Conference!

Questpro Managers Meredith Haaker and Taylor Jones traveled to Chicago this month to mingle with students from all over the country during the annual GIS International Conference. They met some fantastic students and were able to speak with Chapter Advisers, University Faculty, and GIS Alumni during the week. Here are a few of their top tips for a successful career fair or conference!

1.) Do a little research before to see what companies will be there. Approach every booth you can, even if you are familiar with the company. Insurance is a small world, and you never know who you may meet or who has connections with your dream job.

2.) Take charge of the conversation! Approach the booth with confidence and your “elevator pitch”. The recruiters are talking all day long, and sometimes they enjoy taking the back seat to learn more about you and what you’re looking for! Lead with a quick intro including your name, school, major, past internships, and what you may be looking for in a full-time position.

3.) Exchange information! If you like a company, then get one of the recruiter’s business cards, take a brochure, and give them a copy of your resume. This is a vital step that could lead to an internship, job, or professional relationship. Follow up with them after the event, thanking them for their time and reiterating your interest in the company.

4.) Don’t be afraid to wear color. So often, students wear black suits. While this is professional, it’s absolutely appropriate to wear a pop of color through a tie, a pretty blouse under your suit jacket, or even a blue suit rather than black. Let your personality shine through, as long as it’s appropriate!

5.) Use hand sanitizer and SMILE!
